The Sky-Dweller is a model that’s in high demand in the world of Rolex fans and collectors (thus the reason for this review).
The release of the Sky-Dweller in 2012 was an unusual move for Rolex, given that the Swiss watchmaker is not known for introducing new complications often into the market. After its release, the Sky-Dweller became the newest, most sophisticated and highest-end watch of the Rolex brand.
Sky-Dweller Functions
The Rolex Sky-Dweller is unique because it is the only Rolex model that comes with both an annual calendar as well as a GMT function (which keeps track of two time zones) for the active traveler.
Here’s a list of the functions of the Sky-Dweller:
- Dual Time Zone
- Annual Calendar
- Date Function
The calendar function allows the watch to keep the date throughout the year, which means that the Sky-Dweller knows when to display a month with 30 days as opposed to 31 days, which is pretty cool.
All the main functions of the Sky-Dweller can also be accessed via a “Ring Command,” which means that its bezel is first rotated to different positions (to select the month, date, or time) and then the crown is turned to specify the desired value of the functions being accessed.
Rolex Sky-Dweller Materials and Band/Straps
Being what many consider the most luxurious model of the Rolex brand, the Sky-Dweller only comes in 18-karat gold: yellow, rose, or white.
For dial options, you can either go with Roman or Arabic numerals.
The watch comes with either a solid gold bracelet or a brown/black leather strap, which makes the watch more suitable for casual wear. Both configurations are equipped with an Oyster clasp.
Sky-Dweller Price
A good price to pay for a pre-owned Sky-Dweller with a gold metal band is from $32,000 on the low end to $35,000 (based on prices when the video review above was released on September 2015). For a brand new Sky-Dweller, the price will be about $3,000 higher.
If you are OK with a more casual version of the watch, then the leather strap version might be a good option for you. For this configuration, a good price to pay for a preowned model is from around $26,000 to $28,5000. A new, leather-strap Sky-Dweller will also be around $3,000 higher than a used one.
The Sky-Dweller and Your Watch Game
The 42mm Sky-Dweller is a solid piece as it pertains to the Watch Game. It’s a heavy piece that is sure to raise your game to a higher level. You cannot go wrong with a timepiece like this regardless of the configuration you choose. One of Eric’s personal favorite Sky-Dwellers is the one in rose gold with a chocolate dial and a brown alligator strap.
